Department of economics established in 1967 is one of the oldest departments of the college. The department of economics also teaches courses offered by the departments of commerce and mathematics. A well qualified faculty with expertise in various fields of economics and with knowledge of contemporary issues in economics provides guidance to students. Teachers at the department of economics use innovative teaching methods, like presentations, paper reading, quiz etc. They also help in imparting knowledge to students about the current economic scenario and its impact on the Indian economy.

Department of economics organized a workshop on “Use of Statistical and Econometric Techniques in Economic Research” in February, 2015 at the college. The objective of the workshop was to present and get the students to learn about statistical techniques. The participants were introduced to NSSO data and were taught how to calculate various summary statistics using ‘R’ software. The students were also introduced to ‘Gretl’ software and were taught to run various parametric and non- parametric tests on it. The students of the department of economics also attended the seminar on ‘Game Theory’ organized by department of mathematics where they learnt basic strategies and models of the Game Theory.

Department of economics is also working for the “Divinity Society” of the college for the session 2014- 2016, wherein it organises weekly ‘Kirtan’ on Thursdays. The department also celebrated Prakash Utsav of Guru Nanak Dev Ji and Guru Govind Singh Ji, organized Bani Kirtan Competition, managed Nagar Kirtan participation. A Paper Reading Competition was also organized by the department.

Attendance Rules

The students are required to attend not less than 67% of the lectures and tutorials, during each semester in order to enable them to appear for university examinations.

Assessment Scheme

The assessing procedures usually include written assignments, projects, house exam and presentations. Final examinations are held in the month of November and May.
