The History department of this college was established in 1968. The department is engaged in teaching History courses for different honours and program courses. The department has highly qualified, competent and dedicated faculty members, who are constantly endeavouring to enhance teaching standards in a fast changing scenario. In order to sensitize the students to various issues pertaining to the past and create awareness about many themes of history, the department organizes a number of academic activities outside the classroom..
Depending on time and resources the students are taken on trips outside the city of Delhi to nearby historical places like Agra, Jaipur etc. Taking advantage of the central location of the college in Delhi, the department also takes its students for heritage walks on a regular basis. These walks are helpful in exposing students to social milieu of the communities around the college. It also exposes the students to the challenges of historical management. The department also takes its students to museums and archives to introduce them to primary sources, which lays the foundation for their future research projects. Cinema is a powerful tool of social change and it is considered an important medium for the students of History. The powerful medium of visual presentation including film is used by the department to go beyond the classroom lectures. The department organizes seminars, talks etc. to provide the students an opportunity to interact with eminent scholars.
The History Association “GAATHA” The department has an active association called “Gaatha”, whose office bearers are elected every year. The office bearers perform their duties enthusiastically and diligently. The students are also encouraged to participate in various intra as well as inter college competitions. As this is a women’s college the importance of gender sensitization is understood by the department. For this the department organizes gender workshops in collaboration with NGOs like Jagori at regular intervals.
“Chronicle” The three editions of the department e-Newsletter ‘Chronicle’ have been released till May 2018.History Department of Mata Sundri College for Women.which showcases the literary and creative skills of the students and carries articles by students and faculty.
The students are required to attend not less than 68% of the lectures during each semester in order to enable them to appear for university examinations.
A continuous process of internal assessment takes place during each semester that includes theory as well as practicum courses. The assessing procedures usually include written assignments, projects, house exam and presentations. Final examinations are held in the month of November and May.
It is mandatory for a student to secure minimum 40% marks in each theory paper during final examinations, 40% in the internal assessment, 40% in all Practicum courses taken together and 40% in the aggregate for each semester, to pass the examination.
